The Premier League needed a strong centre applying a very sensible rule book to take decisions like the Newcastle United takeover away from the clubs who opposed it.

That is the view of Richard Scudamore, the former chief executive of thePremier League, following the first anniversary of the 305m buy-out a year ago.

The takeover went through just days after a breakthrough in a piracy row between beIN Sports, the Premier Leagues broadcasters in the Middle East, and Saudi Arabia, which had effectively prevented the deal from previously being completed. The Premier Leagues official statement unsurprisingly made no reference to this resolution and instead stated the top-flight had received legally binding assurances that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would not control the club.

A number of member clubs were furious that the deal had been waved through while others were bizarrely irate that they were not given any prior notice by top-flight bosses after only finding out, like the rest of us, when the official announcement was made at 5.18pm on October 7 last year. An extraordinary meeting was called the following Tuesday, which Newcastle were not invited to, where the Premier League explained their reasons for giving the deal the green light to executives from the other 19 clubs.

With Newcastles new backers very much in mind, a week later, clubs voted to temporarily block teams agreeing lucrative sponsorship deals linked to owners at an emergency meeting. This ultimately led to a new rule being introduced where every club sponsorship deal worth more than 1m a year now has to be submitted to the Premier League to ensure they are of fair market value.

That development has not deterred Newcastle, however, and CEO Darren Eales confirmed this week that the club have some great opportunities around the world when it comes to new commercial partnerships. Finding such partners is going to be crucial to boost revenues and, in turn, allow Newcastle to spend more on players within the confines of Financial Fair Play as the Magpies bid to upset the established order in the coming years.

On that note, the Athletic Football Podcasthost Mark Chapman put it to Scudamore that there were various reasons why Premier League clubs did not want the takeover to go through but to those of us who are quite cynical or on the outside, theres an element of you feel a little bit under threat that they might challenge your top 10 place, your top six place, your Champions League place.

Im not avoiding getting into that individual case but your general point is right, which goes back to something I said earlier: it needs a strong centre applying a very sensible rule book to take those decisions away from other clubs, Scudamore responded. I know the US system is where the owners all sit around and vote for new ownership. I think the UK system, where they should have absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever, is the best system.
